What is our vision at Blessed Edward for Religious Education ?

Religious Education aims at deepening young people’s knowledge, understanding and effective appreciation of the Catholic faith tradition, of other religions and of contemporary religious and moral issues
The department consists of three teaching rooms, a chapel and small meeting room.
Who teaches in the R.E department ? What are the facilities like ?
Religious Education is taught by 5 members of staff:

Mr F Tota Second in Department
Mr D McCormack Assistant Principal
Mr J Ndungu
Mrs S Lloyd
Resources are centrally located so that all staff and students have easy access to textbooks, videos, CD-ROMs, artefacts and technical equipment, thus maximising the learning process. Differentiation is written into schemes of work through use of additional resources, tasks and groupings, to encourage each individual to achieve to the best of their ability.
What is the contribution of our Year Chaplains ?
We fortunate to have a Catholic Priest attached to each year group as the cohort moves through the College. These Priests help to administer the liturgy and develop links with a single year.

What do we teach to Key stage three ?
We base our curriculum partly on the national project of catechesis and religious education as endorsed by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales and deliver it through our in house programme of schemes of work. In this programme, which consists of a large variety of resources and media for each of the three years at Key Stage 3, a large variety of topics are covered, as stipulated in the Curriculum Directory for Catholic Schools 1996.
A sample of topics to be found in Year 7 include:
· The Christian Community and the worldwide Church
· Sacraments of Initiation
· The Liturgical Calendar (Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter)
· Prayer
· Hinduism
· Mary and the Saints
· Education for Personal Relationships
What do we teach to Key stage four ?
All students follow a course, which leads to a full award at GCSE. At present we offer Edexcel’s GCSE in Religious Studies. The course is made up of two units which are taught separately in Years 10 and 11.
