English

Throughout the College all pupils receive three hours per week of English.

At KS3 this includes the statutory 3 hours per year of Drama.

At KS4 Drama becomes an optional subject.

In KS4 most students will follow the AQA GCSE course that includes English Language and English Literature.

In key stage 4 some students will access the English only course so that they can gain the best possible grade in this area.

In Key Stage 4 a minority of pupils may be dis-applied from GCSE English and take Functional Skills Level 1 or Certificate Level courses.

In Year 7 setting is done on a whole school, rather than department basis. There are two high ability sets for those who have usually achieved Level 5 at KS2 SATs and two low ability sets for SEN and lower level achievers. There are four mixed ability sets in between these two groups.

Throughout the rest of the College, setting is reviewed at the end of the academic year in July, and again just before October half term so that pupils can be moved if necessary.

In English we run two parallel groups of four classes in Years 8 and 9; with two parallel groups of five in years 10 and 11. This means that class sizes in KS4 are smaller than at KS3.
