Science is a core subject and all students follow Science courses up to the age of 16.  Science is taught by an enthusiastic team to inspire students to investigate the world around them.  Students are encouraged to develop their understanding through a wide variety of experiences that enable students to think analytically and be creative.  Students are encouraged to be inquisitive, to study their environment carefully and by asking questions, further their understanding.
The Science department has its own IT facilities and is supported by two outstanding technicians.

Key Stage 3
At KS3 Science is delivered in 3 hour long periods per week.  The majority of students follow the KS3 programme of study through Years 7, 8 and 9.  Students that show the greatest understanding for Science complete the KS3 programme of study in Year 7 and 8.  In Year 9 these students are accelerated and begin studying for separate GCSE’s in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Key Stage 4
At KS4 students follow a course tailored to their academic ability, learning style and personal goals.  Science is studied for 5 hours a week, if students have opted to study separate GCSE’s in Biology, Chemistry and Physics they study for 7 .5 hours a week.

Students study AQA Core Science GCSE in Year 10 with the majority of students studying AQA Additional Science in Year 11.  This course is worth 2 GCSE’s and is examined in January and June of both Year 10 and 11.  There are 2 controlled assessments, one in Year 10 and one in Year 11, these are completed in school time and each is worth 25% of one GCSE.
In discussion with students, parents and carers some students will study a BTEC in Applied Science from Edexcel.  This has the advantage of being 100% coursework based, therefore there are no exams.  Students are graded as Pass, Merit of Distinction depending on their understanding.  The BTEC course can be studied over two years, as a Diploma or one year as an Extended Certificate.

We offer a wide variety of extra curricular activities including Eco Club, STEM Club and a Science Club.  We encourage students to participate in regional and national competitions.
