Keystage 3


The KS3 curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all students:

  • can understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • can speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
  • learn something of the culture and customs of the countries where the languages are spoken.

Students are set for Year 7 for two hours of French per week and one hour of second language per week, Spanish and German for 6 months each. In Year 8 students are offered the chance to choose their preferred language for two hours a week with the second language offered for one hour a week. In Year 9 students are encouraged to chosoe one language for three hours with a small number opting to continue with 2 languages if they are likely to chose 2 languages as an option for GCSE.

Keystage 4


The GCSE specification in Languages will enable students to:

  • develop understanding of the language in a variety of contexts
  • develop knowledge of the language and language learning skills
  • develop the ability to communicate effectively in the language
  • develop awareness and understanding of countries and communities where the language is spoken.

Students are prepared for assessment in Speaking (25%), Listening (25%), Reading (25%) and Writing (25%).

Students are offered GCSE in French, German and Spanish as part of the curriculum. The EDUQAS examination board is used for MFL. (Additional heritage language GCSEs are taken by some students outside of the curriculum, such as Italian, Portuguese, Urdu, Chinese and Polish).

Students are taught in mixed ability classes at KS4.
