Mental Health and Wellbeing

September 2022

Returning to school after the summer break can be a challenging time for some young people.  They can be anxious about starting a new school or a new year group or even having a new teacher.  As a parent/carer, we can be unsure as to what to do for the best, here are some suggestions:

  • Look for changes in their mood, have they become quiet, withdrawn, short tempered etc.
  • Ask them about their day, what did they enjoy the most or the least.
  • Encourage them to talk about any worries or concerns they have or suggest they write them in a journal or keep a mood diary to help them keep track of how they are feeling.
  • Establish good morning and evening routines for example an appropriate time to go to bed, getting their school bag ready the night before, getting up with plenty of time to get ready for school.
